About Shipman

* Ag Activity Along Hwy 11

W. H. Shipman, Limited announces clearing of more fields for Papayas – In late July and August new fields adjacent to Highway 11 (Volcano Highway) were cleared.  These fields were cleared for several farmers who will be planting papayas for an ever-growing Hawaii Island Papaya Industry.

Since its inception in 1882, Shipman has been committed to ensuring a strong agricultural industry for the Island of Hawaii.  More than one third of Shipman’s 16,000 acreage in Kea’au are devoted to diversified agriculture.  Crops grown on Shipman lands include: papayas, bananas, macadamia nuts, vegetables, citrus and bio-fuels.  Director of Agricultural Operations, Loren Mochida explains that “we continue to work hard to create an excellent environment for hard working farmers on our lands.”  It is estimated that over 900 men and women actively farm these lands – twice the number that were once employed by Puna Sugar’s Kea’au operations.

Strong infrastructure, proximity to ports and resources necessary for successful farming make Shipman’s farm lands and ideal place for the industry.
